To put it in another way, that's like if you were to be forced to upload your iTunes musiques' files to all other users who try to download them from iTunes. So, while it's not right to call it a malware, the fact remains that the way the launcher is set up is actually like a malware in the definition that it is a background process that can harm the user without his or her acknowledgement. When Akamai Technology came out with an public explaination of what Akamai NetSession was doing and how publishers are the ones who has to set it right, that's when pretty much all the big MMOs which was using it (like World of Tank, for example) applied an update to their launcher that made the Auto-Update and Launche with Windows disabled by default and also an update to the Akamai NetSession process that would kill it when the launcher is closed. (It's a vicious cycle where you get less players, less incomes and can't afford new IPs and so on.) Snail Games was hit really hard for it and, after that they never recovered. Even Blizzard' WoW went with the F2P idea by allowing player to play for free up to level 20. It was back then that some subscription MMO switched toward the F2P models (such as LoTR Online). Back then, premium MMOs (free-to-play with in-game cash shop) were at the peak of their popularity. Their launcher was installing a background process that allowed each user to act as a seed uploader toward those who didn't had the same version or complete game.
To give you an example, that's a practice that Snail Games tried doing back around 8-10 years ago. Otherwise, the option is usually turned off by default and can be activated manually.Īlso, another issue comes from the idea that uninstalling the game doesn't uninstall the launcher completely and doesn't kill the background process. There are other games that offers this option like most MMOs which has an update launcher when you start them up, but that usually comes with a question directly asked to the user such as a check box with "Start with Windows" or something alike during the first launch or something like that. It also affect your gameplay experience if you're on a rather slow/average connection speed as your upload bandwidth is kept being taken by the launcher even after your game is up to date. The fact remains that if you don't turn off the auto-update and you're on a limited bandwidth, you're one of those people who might end up busting your bandwidth limit as the launcher, by default, is set to make your PC a seed source for other users who wish to download the game and/or updates. The issue which makes people angry is mostly that the Launcher has the worse options by default instead of asking (and describing) whatever the user wants himself. fortnite also have this normality but because of freak minded reddit virgins is apparently "malware" in this game.
